BRUXISM & TMJ

Bruxism or Teeth Grinding Treatments

Bruxism or teeth grinding is an increasingly common condition, which can lead to wearing of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth and their subsequent sensitivity, headaches and pain upon opening and closing of the mouth.

Bruxism is most commonly related to psychological factors, such as stress and anger, and is most commonly exhibited during sleep.

Whilst many patients come to us with complaints related to bruxism, many others suffer from the condition and do not even realise it!

Symptoms:

  • Headache and/or ear pain, especially after waking up
  • Pain and tension at the jaws; feeling that our TMJ is “locked”, especially after waking up
  • Teeth sensitivity to cold, hot, sweets, pressure
  • Clicking sound during mouth opening and closing
  • Cracked/chipped teeth and wearing of occlusal surfaces of teeth
  • Your partner can hear you making sound with your teeth while sleeping

Wearing a nite guard is the simplest way to compad bruxism. It is comfortable to wear and offers relief even after its first few uses!

Nite guard retainers:

  • Stop further wearing of the teeth
  • Protect teeth and restorations from breaking/ cracking
  • Relief pain related to bruxism (headaches, throatache, general tension feeling)
  • Relief stress from TMJ
  • May improve breathing during sleep; might help patients to snore less
